We are a family of five struggling with weight issues. My husband and I have always gained and lost weight and consistency is our problem. Unfortunately, we have little ones watching what we put in our mouths and how much we move. They are considered obese by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the statistics for childhood obesity and health risks are alarming.
I have seen overweight children, and I would think how could they let their children get that way? I would never allow that. That was very shallow and narrow minded of me, because it can happen quickly, especially with their changing bodies and the constant supply of sugary foods all around them.
This wake up call has motivated me to start a revolution in our household and I am going to document every step of the way. This is going to be a lifesaver and life changer for us.
I have a three pronged strategy:
Nutrition: We are Christians and in the past have followed the Daniel Plan. We will use this approach for our meals and snacks.
- Preparation-I will involve the kids as much as possible in this process, letting them pick the meals, participating in cooking, and preparing meals as much in advance as possible.
- Consistency-This will be the hardest part for me. I am not consistent by my very nature. I will need tremendous amounts of support in this area. My husband, family members, friends, and hopefully this blog will help me stay inspired and on top of this. I plan on relying on God and prayer for support and help throughout this process. I will not succeed with out this, he brought me to this idea the first place.
- Issues-Foresight and hindsight bring me to issues, such as, sports practices, unforeseeable events, weather, food from other sources (grandparents), and pure laziness...ugh. This is where the above support comes in!
Exercise: My family and I will exercise a minimum of 3 days per week doing a variety of activities for a minimum of 1 hour. I hope to record these moments and share them with you, so you can see the struggles and successes of a family trying to go from ho-hum to fit and fun. The other days my children have sports practices for and hour and a half. I will also be exercising apart from these times, I hope to share these moments with you as well.
Education: The biggest roadblock we face is portion control, boredom eating, and sugar cravings. I will scour the Internet to teach my children how food IS powerful in good ways and bad ways. I want them to learn how to fuel their bodies not their emotions. We will learn!
All of this looks amazing on paper but will it work for 90 days, it has too, the quality of my familys' lives depend on it. Looking forward to sharing my life with you!
